Amongst the rather desolate backstreets of Flemington; lies Laksa King; an Urbanspoon favorite and boy is that obvious – people line the streets; so ensure you book ahead to avoid disappointment! For those of you who are unaware, Laksa is a delicious bowlful of noodles with a Chinese and Malaysian style soup. Laksa King’s specialty – Curry Laksa.
We called prior that night to make a booking at the earliest convenience available, 8pm it was. Despite arriving at our allotted time, a 20 minute wait for our table was necessary. Whilst Laksa King doesn’t boast the physical appearance of fine dining restaurants, the rather small entrance is quite deceiving as there is an abundance of space available throughout the premise – and the atmosphere sets this place alight!
The menu presents an equally large array of Malaysian and Chinese cuisine; capable to cater to practically any dietary requirement; in a tasty fashion! Staff were pleasant and frequently available to cater to our every request.
Keeping in tune with the theme – we ordered Laksa – within 5 minutes, our food arrived; bubbling away, thick aromas of coconut and chilli filling the air.
Roti with Satay Sauce – $6.80
Our entree arrived first, presentation of the satay sauce in particular was rather sloppy – a rather lack-luster dish, with little in it’s favour – rather than the generous serving size. The Roti had a dough-y texture, and a partly crispy outlining; the peanut sauce lacked any punch or taste.
Pork Spare Ribs in Honey Pepper Sauce – $16.80
Whilst the labeling of the pork as ‘spare ribs’ left a question to be answered (in that they didn’t appear to be ribs at all, or pork for that matter), Laksa King presented a sizzling, flavorful dish, both tender and of an ample portion – definitely order rice or a side of noodles if you consider this your main!
Beef Curry Laksa – $9.80
Onto our mains, and boy did they impress – serves were beyond generous, the aroma of thick, authentic Asian cuisine filled the air. Lashings of spices, coconut, chilli complimented the tender beef and combination of noodles included. The eggplant graciously floating on top, was perfectly cooked and packed immense flavour; the use of more of these could perfect the dish!
Roasted Duck Curry Laksa – $13.20
Mixed Noodle with Shredded Roasted Duck
A pungent essence of chilli and warmth hit us, as this volcano-like plate was laid in front of us; thick slices of duck (contrary to our expectations of thin slithers); complimented a pleasantly spicy, yet bearable broth. This curry laksa embodied a number of renowned Asian elements; the soothing coconut and punchy spice contrasted brilliantly.
Ice Kachang – $6.90
Shaved Ice, Red Bean, Grass Jelly, Lychees, Palm Seed, Evaporated Milk and Palm Sugar
This corral-like mountain of ice was a spectacle in itself; generating interest from a number of people nearby. The ice paired with the evaportated milk and palm sugar provided a sweet, refreshing hit of flavour; whilst the complimenting lychees were equally flavorsome (too bad they didn’t add more!). Although the red beans are traditional to Asian dessert cuisine we weren’t fans of this inclusion; the same is to be said for the jelly base; quite tasteless.
Value for money: 9/10
Pros: Quick food service, delicious food, large portions, authentic spicy Asian cuisine, extra cutlery available at the table
Cons: Had to wait for a table beyond booking time
Would we return? Yes, the Laksa is delicious!
